Lesser known benefits to LED bulbs

LED light bulbs are growing in popularity these days, and it is not difficult to foresee a time when they force the complete retirement of older light bulb technologies.  They offer a lot of highly publicised benefits given that they are incredibly energy efficient by comparison and as a result of this and the fact that their average life expectancy is well over three times as long as a standard incandescent light bulb renders them very cost effective.

There are however, plenty of other benefits to having LED bulbs installed in your home or office that never seem to receive as much publicity as the main three.  So here are for of the lesser known benefits to using LED lights for your home and hopefully they prove useful.

LED’s offer a lot of flexibility in design

Given that LED’s draw a lot less current than traditional light bulbs there is a much greater flexibility in the number you can have in a circuit.  They are easily available in every colour of the rainbow and due to the way they operate it is easy to control the lights, or arrays of lights.  Plus there are plenty of kits available to help you connect them to smart home technologies.

LED’s power on instantly

Many of you might remember when the first generations of energy saving lightbulbs came onto the market ten or so years ago.  Energy companies were giving them away in an attempt to promote energy efficiency and they were prolific.  They did however take an age to light up.  The technology did improve over the years but the early ones could take up to 30 seconds to illuminate.  LED’s are not only more efficient than these “energy efficient” light bulbs, they are digital devices and illuminate instantaneously.

LED’s can handle extreme temperatures

As they are made of plastics as opposed to glass, LED light bulbs can handle a much wider range of temperatures than traditional light bulbs.  As previously mentioned, LED’s operate at a considerably lower temperature than incandescent light bulbs and they can withstand heat outside the range of halogens.

LED’s emit almost zero UV radiation


Natural sun light contains a wide spectrum of light radiation that’s a lot more than the visible range of light human eyes can see.  Within this range of is the UV or ultra violet spectrum of light, and it is this range that causes a lot of damage.  UV light is the cause of sunburn, which is why it is important to check any sun cream products you use, but UV also damages fabrics, paint, plastics and more.  The light will fade and discolour these items to a greater or lesser degree depending on their composition.  LED’s emit almost no light from this range of the spectrum and as such can be used much more safely in areas with light sensitive items that need protecting.
